Product Profile
1. Introduction
Methyl Diethanolamine (MDEA) is a commonly used alkanolamine compound with the chemical formula C₅H₁₃NO₂. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a slight amine-like odor and strong hygroscopicity. As a tertiary amine with hydroxyl groups, MDEA is widely utilized in gas treatment, petrochemicals, and specialty chemical manufacturing due to its selective absorption properties and high stability.
2. Chemical Properties
Chemical Formula: C₅H₁₃NO₂
Molecular Weight: 119.16 g/mol
Structure: A tertiary amine with one methyl group and two hydroxyethyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.
Appearance: Colorless, transparent, hygroscopic liquid.
Key Features: Weak base, low vapor pressure, excellent selective absorption of CO₂, and high thermal and chemical stability.
3. Applications
Gas Treatment: Widely used in amine-based gas sweetening processes to remove CO₂ and H₂S from natural gas, refinery gas, and synthesis gas.
Petrochemical Industry: Plays an important role in refinery operations for gas purification and improving fuel quality.
Chemical Intermediate: Used in the production of surfactants, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.
Environmental Uses: Applied in emission control and acid gas removal with high efficiency and low energy consumption.
4. Safety & Handling
Hazards: May cause irritation to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
Precautions: Ensure adequate ventilation during handling. Use protective gloves, goggles, and clothing.
Spillage: Absorb small spills with inert material; collect large spills for recycling or proper disposal. Prevent discharge into waterways.
5. Packaging & Storage
Packaging: Supplied in 200L steel drums or IBC tanks.
Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse away from strong oxidizers.
Shelf Life: Up to 12 months when properly sealed and stored.
